Heartlands Backpack

When designing the Heartlands Backpack, I wrote it as a “choose your own adventure” pattern. There’s 3 different options in the pattern, which you can either add or omit from the bag, depending on what features you want (and also how much sewing time – going with just the base backpack would be a great option for a last-minute gift, craft fair, or for an easier sew).

Watch the trailer video below:

Finished Size: 7” long x 15” tall x 2-1/2” deep (18cm x 38cm x 6cm)

Supplies Needed to Make This Bag:

  • 1/2 yard/metre of exterior fabric
  • 1 yard/metre of lining fabric
  • 1/2 yard/metre of 45” wide Pellon fusible fleece or Pellon Thermolam (I used Pellon Thermolam)
  • 3 yards/metres 20” wide Pellon SF-101 Shape Flex fusible woven interfacing (or med-weight fusible interfacing)
  • 14“ handbag zipper (#4.5 or #5 zipper) *will be trimmed to 12-1/4” in Step #24 +this zipper will only be used for the backpack with the 3-dimensional front pocket (see page #2 for explanation)
  • 16“ handbag zipper (#4.5 or #5 zipper) *will be trimmed to 15-1/4” in Step #40
  • Three 9” zippers (can be either #3, #4.5, or #5 zipper) (one each will be used for option B and C – see page #2)
  • 1-1/2 yards of 1-1/2” wide webbing (I used Renaissance Ribbons webbing)
  • 1-1/2” metal slider
  • 1-1/2” swivel clip
  • Two 3/4” d-rings
  • Optional: 1 rivet or Chicago screw

The pdf pattern includes 19 pages of sewing instructions, complete with 53 step-by-step photos.

Also included in the PDF pattern are printable pattern pieces for your home printer. The following files will all be included with your PDF pattern purchase:

  • SVG Files (for electric cutting machines, such as the Brother Scan N Cut and the Cricut Maker)
  • Projector Files (for use with home projectors for cutting out fabric; please see the group Projectors for Sewing for more information)
  • A0 Files (large-format 33″ x 46″ pattern page for printing at your local copy shop, in case you would rather not tape together the pattern pages that are included in the PDF pattern)

Thank you to Chera Phipody for the lovely Heartlands Backpack photos.
