The Amethyst Project Bag started out as a request from my daughter on Christmas morning. She had gotten a stack of drawing books and sketch pads from Santa, and she wanted some sort of bag to hold them all. So we sat down and came up a plan, and I told her that I would come up with a sewing pattern and make her bag. A few hours later, she came back and asked me where her bag was. Haha, I’m fast but I’m not that fast! I had some projects to wrap up at the beginning of the year, but I finally got around to my daughter’s pattern and she was super excited to see the finished bag (she was quite a bit disappointed that I had to ‘borrow’ her bag to do the photoshoot yesterday while she was in school).
The Amethyst Project Bag sewing pattern is available now in pdf and paper pattern format in my pattern shop.
This bag features ample storage space for any project or hobby – quilting, drawing, hand-sewing, and so much more! The lining features a zippered pouch, mesh zippered pocket, and elastics for holding pens or other items. The bottom of the case has an elastic buckle strap to hold quilt blocks, books, and rulers.

My Amethyst Project Bag sample bags were made in Tula Pink fabrics – one bag from my favorite ‘The Birds and the Bees’ line, and a bright, fun bag in ‘Chipper’ fabrics.
Besides sketch books, this bag is perfect to hold all of your quilting retreat supplies. The bag will hold 12-1/2″ blocks with room to spare, and it’s nice to have a place for my 12″ x 6″ ruler also!
I hope you’ve enjoyed this peak into the Amethyst Project Bag! I’m very excited to show you all of the tester bags. They’re stunning and so functional – what will you put in your bag?!

Love this pattern. Will definitely have to make this.
I love the design of this bag! You and your daughter did great!!
Love this! What skill level would you rate this pattern as?
Sara, Like your daughter, I have many art supplies that I sometimes need to carry. I’ll make at least one amethyst bag for my art stuff. I may make a second bag for my in progress sewing projects. My stash even has enough fabric for the outside of the bag, but I might need to buy fabric for the lining and I KNOW I’ll need to buy most of the notions and supplies.
I have 9 inch zippers on hand also… which will do for the smallest zipper. I might just buy a roll of zipper to accomodate the long one and the mid-length zipper, which will be easier than trying to round up the proper length zippers
I have Black Nylon Heavy Webbing Strap that I’ll use for the handles, which I believe to be sturdier than the fabric I plan to use.
I love this! I have to think on how I could make it a little bigger to hold a pair of shoes, some clothing, etc. We attend the LDS Temple and take a bag with all our white clothing…this would be great!
That is such a cool bag!
Sara, I think that if you were to sew a seam across the elastic at the base of the parachute buckle, it would lay flat as opposed to popping upright like in all the pictures. This is my next purchase. I love this case. It will be great to give the grand nieces for Christmas. Talk to you on Sunday.
LOVE this bag!! Going to have to make one or two for my quilting projects in progress!
I love it. This bag fits a Notebook?
Where can I get a pattern?
Great bag. Is there a tutorial for it?
Hello Sandra! I will have an online workshop available for this bag in August. Thank you!
I have the pattern, and supplies ready to go. How will I know when the tutorial will be posted? I did sign up for the newsletter. Anxiously awaiting for the help I need to get started.
Thank you for sharing your talents!
Hi there! Absolutely, signing up for my newsletter is the best way to find out first when that online workshop will be available (should be mid-August). Thank you!
Hi! I bought your pattern from FQS and am interested in the video or workshop tutorial. Can they be accessed without a repurchase of the pattern? Thanks!
Hi Kathi! Thanks for purchasing my pattern! Yes! You certainly can buy just the video if you already have the pattern. Just visit that pattern’s product listing and from the dropdown box, select ‘Video Only’. Hope this helps!
I’m very interested in this pattern and I’m wondering how easily it can be enlarged?
Hello Carol! I haven’t personally enlarged it, but since this patterns is all squares and rectangles, you could start with the Main Panel and choose the size you’ll need, and then adjust the length of the front and back panels based on what you’ve added to the Main Panel. You’ll likely need to double what you’ve added to the Main Panel. Thank you!
I really like this pattern but I need one a little larger for quilt squares, approx 20×20. How hard would it be to increase the size of this?
Hello Amanda, I have a video explaining how to increase/decrease: https://sewsweetness.com/2022/06/how-to-increase-or-decrease-a-sewing-pattern.html Thank you!
